Blog Post Week: 4/14/17

Earlier in this assignment of writing weekly prompts about events happening within our education system, I wrote about the topic of transgender rights. It was when Trump didn’t favor the right of transgenders having their own bathrooms, or have specific rights to their bathroom choices. I found that this one transgender kid had the willpower to fight against in the supreme court, unfortunately it didn’t go so well according to this week’s article. In this article “Court dismisses lawsuit by student ‘distressed’ over schools’ transgender policy” by Balingit, finally tells use the supremes courts ideas on this transgender right. The supreme court sees to agree with the idea of students “who might have the physical features of one sex but are permitted to use the bathroom of the opposite sex which the student ‘identifies’ as”(Balingit 1). What the court and school system is saying that they might not make independent bathroom for the transgender students, but they are willing to still allow students to use the bathroom that they feel they identify themselves as. The down of this situation is the way other students feel about it. The lack of students having their own bathroom means that other nontransgender student are feeling uncomfortable. As one boy states, “terrified of the thought of having to share intimate spaces with students who have the physical features of a girl, seeing such conduct as an invasion of privacy”(Balingit 1). Is it really a invasion of privacy? I don’t think so, because that student that does seem like an actual boy and girl has the right to identify themselves as how they want. This brings into play the bullying through school systems. The lack of allowing these students to have a safe space can cause more harm and torture on both ends. Even though the school systems say, “We will also continue to accommodate the needs of transgender and gender nonconforming students in a way that protects the dignity and privacy of all students” (Balingit 1). I would like to know how, when they are all being forced to step on each others toes while being on thin ice. One wrong look from either parties could start WW3. I think it will be interesting on what this issue brings in the future as well. My main question is are transgender students really getting equal rights, when they are being forced to be strong and go into a bathroom that they are being welcomed in by their peers? I am curious to see the end results of this whole thing, and more policies on the issues with colleges.
