“Gee and Discourses” #2

Throughout Gee’s writing he talks about secondary discourse. Secondary discourse are learned through social. Social environments are known to be places like school, and work. There are two different types of secondary discourse which is dominant and non-dominant. A personal example of secondary discourse is my transition to UNE. This is simply a secondary discourse because I am learning new things by observing people throughout my day. Gee agrees when she writes, “We acquire these fluently to the extent that we are given access to these institutions and are allowed apprenticeships within them” (Gee 8). She is explaining that these examples of viewing people by their values, doings, and belief will help you adapt to the social status in that particular environment. So here in Maine the students are mostly wearing the brands Patagonia, Burks, and Vineyard Vines. Back home people didn’t wear those brands, so as viewed people I noticed the difference of being back home to here. Almost like a trend. I viewed this trend to be of a higher social class. Also considering the cars on campus in the parking lots, and how people talk. They all talk about more expensive topic, where as my town back home wasn’t abut brandnames. Here I also struggle with being a leader here. Back home I was a leader in student council. As I view people in the library they all see independent and no one needs a leader in college. Also back in  people didn’t really value our education as much, where as here everyone values their educations. The amount of work everyone puts into their classes is unbelievable. Which I understand as a med bio major.  Although eventually I will adjust it just takes time.

    Hi, Sarah,
I find your observations of the UNE student Discourse interesting. I am curious about your ideas of why so many students seem to wear a particular brand. Who do you think decides what is stylish here? Why might it be different from your hometown’s accepted styles?
Your thoughts on possible leadership roles for yourself are interesting. I think that you will find opportunities for leadership, but maybe that will take some time as you get to know campus clubs and organizations. Have you looked into UNE student government? Here’s a link to check out: http://www.une.edu/studentlife/biddeford/activities-organizations/clubs-and-organizations.
Thanks for your response, and I look forward to learning more of your thoughts,
    Jen

I don’t have a specific idea on who started the trends here. If I was to state my opinion on that I would say that it is because of the local businesses. In Maine there is the L.L. Bean outlet which is a popular brand around here, as well as Patagonia. These two brands are very well worn by the students here at UNE. Back home we dont really have the huge outlets near us we have American eagle, and Urban Outfitters is usually where we shop. So it does depend I think on what is around that area. I have thought about becoming more of a leader just feel like it will take time. I also dont want to rush into anything at the moment.
