Amy Cuddy Quoatation

While reviewing the Amy Cuddy Ted talk, I think about how much of her presentation is accurate. Her main point in this talk is the concept of being able to tell how a person feels simply by their body language. Today we had the task to try a power stance before class. While sitting in class I naturally sat in my chair and slouched. Not for the reason I felt down or upset just because it was comfortable. This is the reason i disagree with Amy’s point of body language pursuing someones feelings. Body language wasn’t the only thing she discussed throughout her presentation, she also talks about confidence and power throughout her lecture. Amy Cuddy herself writes “And tomorrow you are going to fake it, your’re going to make yourself powerful” (Amy Cuddy). Cuddy is implying that if you just simply fake an answer that could possible be right, or participate in class then you will be more engaged with the material.Being engaged will allow to have more confidence in yourself as student and feel powerful. After reading and interpreting the quote I tried it. I sat through class with a more powerful personality. All it took was about thirty minutes of concentration and effort. As a student that is “faking it”, I felt like i was a little bit more engaged in the class period. I did not feel like i was cheating the system in anyway. I was still doing my own work, but i was just more aware when trying this technique. Eventually the more I fake it, I will eventually be able to do it without any thought process.

    Hi, Sarah,

Thanks for being willing to try this activity — and for sticking with it for 30 minutes! Are you considering trying it again a few times before deciding about its impact? We will talk more about interpreting Cuddy’s idea of faking it as a means to cheat the system.

Revisit chapter 3 in They Say, I Say. You have included a signal phrase to introduce your quote, but you did not include an explanation of the quote. Respond to this reply to add it. We’ll talk more in class about this frame as a writing move.

Thanks for applying a growth mindset!

    Thanks for your thoughtful post!
