Blog Post Week 3/18/17

Today I found an informational article about a new plan Betsy DeVosis proposing to better our nation’s education system. In the article “Did Betsy DeVos just ask states to ignore part of federal education law” by Valeria Strauss discusses the thoughts DeVos has on changing the Every Student Succeeds Act. This act was previously put into place  by Obama which stated “When developing their accountability plans, must consult with outside stakeholders, including teachers, principals, parents, administrators and others” (Strauss 1). After DeVos revised this plan this pass week it now states “In its consolidated State plan, each SEA may, but is not required to, include supplemental information such as its overall vision for improving outcomes for all students and its efforts to consult with and engage stakeholders when developing its consolidated State plan” (Strauss 1). I don’t think that this revision is necessary, or will help our education system drastically. Isn’t a teacher’s job to help students understand the information and present lesson plans for their students? If so then why are we allowing the government, people that possibly have no educational background be in controlling of outcomes of our education system without the thoughts of educators. This then raises the concern on how this could affect students with special needs. The government does not know how to properly engage with each individual student’s. I feel like they are only going to have a set of standards and expect everyone to follow them. Which Strauss also states this standard idea will not work because “decision making becomes less transparent and puts our most vulnerable children at risk of falling through the cracks” (2). The children that don’t follow those set standards because they can’t mentally do it will end up becoming more vulnerable to failing. This could resort to the students no longer attending school as a whole or just simply shutting down.We will have to see how this new revision of this plan works out over the next couple weeks. Hopefully DeVos will make some better adjustments to our education system.
